The SfS "Significant Event Tracker" (SET), Legislative Proposal
3-5 Mar 2014: Dietrich and Mike attended the VFW National Legislative Conference in DC where they introduced the "Tracker" Bill. We also took some time to visit the Senator's office and discuss the "legislative process" for the Bill. We were assured that there are several avenues to follow if this first plan fails, the legislative aide is a former Marine and is committed to not let this die out! Semper Fi.
17 Feb 2014: Here is the latest update on the tracker: We passed it off to Sen. Brown's office at the first of the year. We have been told that while Mike was away on the South America climb, they have converted the document into legislation, they have acquired endorsements from the VFW, American Legion, and AMVETS, and they are currently seeking co-sponsorship for the "Bill" to be. We are very excited, but "nothing is until it was" so we continue to wait patiently for an update from their office.
The DD Form#### "Significant Event Tracker" (SET)
The "Significant Event Tracker" is an administrative tool that would track significant events that might later be associated with PTS or mTBI. It would be an officially recognized document, given to a service-member at discharge, containing a list of these "vetted" service related significant events. It's cost-effective, it utilizes already existing resources, it identifies overlooked and under-reported events, it can eliminate time-consuming verification for service related claims, and it can streamline the VA process for veterans of the future.
Imagine this, when you are discharged you are handed your DD214 record of military service, and "another DD form" containing a record of "Significant Incidents" that you experienced while serving. Sometime later you find you begin struggling with issues, so you go to the VA and get seen by a doctor who diagnoses you with PTS or a Mild TBI. You hand in your "Tracker" and it confirms incidents that identify the struggles you are having today. No more waiting for the VA to verify your "story" and decide your claim (which can take years). The Individual Event Tracker (IET) is one item we are pushing to have developed and utilized by the DoD. It would be an Official Document, updated and verified while on service. It is scrutinized at the time of "actual reporting" of incidents so that the resulting document at discharge can carry the same weight and authority as our DD214's.
